What is Your #1 Priority?
I wrote my Amazon No. 1 New Release and Bestseller in 2018. It was a product of my experiences up to that point with one simple message. It takes just a few minutes to change your perspective and shift your trajectory.
In the matter of a few moments,
everything can change.
Recently I was part of a University of Miami (The "U") webinar panel. Our topic: Health and Wellness for entrepreneurs.
The moderator asked me what could I share with the audience about how they could Enjoy Their Success Now and tips from my book that could be put to use right away.
One of the biggest mistakes ceos and managing partners make is in not making their health a top priority. I see it all the time.
A mentor once told me that as the CEO or leader of a company or any organization, you have many responsibilities and multiple priorities. Everyone is counting on you to lead them and the organization forward. You need to be thinking across business lines and departments and have your finger on the pulse of everything.
But when you are in poor health, you have only one priority - to recover and get your life back. It's easy to forget about yourself when you are so focused on leading everyone else. You sacrifice yourself with thoughts of taking care of you later.
And nowadays, given the massive stress from all sides having come through the pandemic and now the post-pandemic world, researchers are finding that mental and emotional health across the board and at all levels have been severely impacted.
So here are a few key takeaways:
➠Take 5 minutes to change your perspective and change your life. Simply focus on your breathing.
➠Be present. There are many ways to do this. Physical exercise is a great way to clear the clutter and create more capacity, more mindspace, to solve the problems or seize the opportunities with clarity. A simple process of focused breathing by itself or in concert with exercise will achieve results.
➠Be in gratitude. The state of gratitude is one of the highest forms of emotions. A daily habit of focusing on what you have as opposed to what you feel you're lacking elevates your mindset.
➠Have a clear vision of where you are headed. What is your purpose in life and work? Clarity on a personal level enables you to speak and lead with confidence.
➠Stay true to your core values. At times this will seem hard. Probably one of the hardest things to get right. It's easy to try to be a leader that you think others want you to be. This is also when self-doubt creeps in. You know, Imposter Syndrome.
➠Find a mentor - someone who can give you unfiltered advice and perspectives and can help you discover your blind spots. A good mentor will share their wisdom and help you to think differently enabling you to achieve greater success faster than if going it alone.
Some Final Thoughts
Make your health your top priority or at least near the top. The daily demands on you will not go away so it will take real self-determination to make this happen. Mine is just one method among many that will help you regain clarity, focus and improved health.
As the title of my book suggests, you can begin to master your health, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health with a simple daily habit of focused breathing. This too will enhance your leadership capacity.
Breathing is the one autonomic bodily function that you can consciously control. And your breath is the quickest way I know to calm your mind, clear away the clutter of noise and regain your clarity.
So take at least 5 minutes each day to focus on you. Give it some time. And with regular frequency, you'll find that your authentic leadership will come into focus with clarity and confidence to seize the day.
