I’ve been told that I appear to be too task oriented and need to improve my empathy. Do you have any suggestions?
John: Empathy is part of a broader discipline around emotions, Emotional Intelligence or EQ (emotional quotient). There are many resources available to enhance your EQ. The key to improving in this area is increased awareness, that of yourself and of others. Once you have an understanding of how you show up under stress and in a stress-free state, you can choose to make changes in behavior that do not serve your leadership style. Most recently, “Emotional Intelligence 2.0” (Bradberry and Grieves) and other resources like “Strength Finders 2.0 by Gallup” (Rath) provide guidance to improving understanding. These and other assessment tools can be a useful investment of your time. Bottom line, if you want to lead effectively, you need to be aware of how you behave and your personality style, and their effects these have on your team.
